McCain: Yes.
Moderator: I'm curious, is there anybody on the stage that does not agree, believe in evolution?
McCain: May I just add to that?
Moderator: Sure.
McCain: I believe in evolution. But I also believe, when I hike the Grand Canyon and see it at sunset, that the hand of God is there also.

Does it seem to anyone else that McCain is trying to have it both ways? Sure, he could actually believe both, but the fact that he needed to add to his statement indicates that he's trying to placate both evolutionists and creationists...

If you look at the youtube link I posted last week, you can see an essential missing part of this transcript. Three of the candidates raised their hands to the question. They do not believe in evolution. Bob
The way McCain phrased it doesn't seem very creationist to me- I think you could believe in a mechanistic, arbitrary evolution that happened to create humanity, but also think some things are inexplicable- like the beauty of the Grand Canyon. Is that unreasonable? (obviously, if his competition consists of several creationists, it would be politically useful to say such a thing too, but I don't think there's necessarily a contradiction)
I saw the video link and I was curious about what the last comment was that was cut off. Interesting how the video cut McCain off while the transcript doesn't include the three candidates. Do transcripts usually include descriptions of key gestures/actions?
